Rather than brightening up the space with more windows, this design for a one-bedroom apartment embraces the mood and elegance of the dark. It is an open floor plan that incorporates natural elements of wood, metal, stone, and brick along with light furnishings to give the space contrast and warmth.

The bathroom is tucked away behind the fireplace wall to allow the majority of the apartment to remain open and really let the architectural elements shine in the main living space. The full length stone wall adds enormous character without taking up the much needed floor space.
The contrast of light and dark keep the space interesting. The subtle green and red tones add further interest to the overall neutral palette.
Even in a bedroom without windows, the play of light and dark is achieved with paint, furnishings, and accessories. A mirror with curtains flanking either side gives the impression of a window while also reflecting light back into the room. The glass artwork does likewise.
The shape of the long rectangular windows are continued along the wall with the mirror and the tall slab of white stone. The stone is also used in the kitchen island to tie the space together and add contrast. The rugs on the floor help distinguish the separate areas of the open layout.
The tall ceilings are brought down to a cozier level by painting the upper portion of the wall the same black color as the ceiling and using the wood plank as a border between the black and cream portions of the wall.

The fireplace is nestled between two large cabinets. These dark cabinets fade into the background almost as more of a wall because of their color and simplicity. They make excellent storage while keeping the room from feeling overly cluttered. The desk allows a space to display meaningful items.
The kitchen is painted a muted green to compliment the black walls and ceiling, while adding some color to a mostly neutral palette.
Since the room only has three windows, all on the same wall, the open floor plan allows for the windows to bring light into the entire space, and allows the architectural elements to be on full display.
The sliding doors to the bathroom are not only useful for this narrow space, but the frosted glass allows for much needed privacy and provides the illusion of windows to an otherwise windowless room.
A simple fireplace lets the artwork and unique fixtures take center stage.
Looking out from the bedroom you are still able to have a view of the cozy fireplace.
The extra lighting and bright furnishings help bring warmth into the space and lets the dark walls recede into the background giving the illusion of a bigger space.
