And where I go you know, and the way you know. Thomas said to Him, Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way? Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
John 14:4–6
Jesus has made known to His disciples the destination of their journey: it is the house where God the Father dwells. No child of God has yet reached this eternal home; that will not happen until the Lord comes and raptures all the redeemed to Himself (cf. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). But the Lord is concerned that even here and now believers should know the Father and have a relationship with Him – before they come to His house. Thomas is overwhelmed because his thoughts are confined to Jewish expectations. He sees in Jesus the promised Messiah of Israel and waits for Him to fulfil the promises of God to the people of Israel for this earth and the kingdom.
As is often the case, the Lord’s answer goes far beyond the question of the questioner. First of all, He presents himself as the way, the way to the Father. Without faith in Jesus, the Son of God, no one can come to the Father and the Father’s house: “Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either” (1 John 2:23).
Moreover, Jesus Christ is the truth. In a time when people consider completely opposite opinions to be equally correct and equally valid, one may be offended by such an absolute statement. But whoever wants to know who God is, who man is, what sin is, who the devil is ..., finds the answer in the Son of God.
And third, He is the life – not the natural life, but the life that enables us to know God now and forever and to live in intimate relationship with Him.
