For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:22–23
Hardly any statement in the Bible evokes such general displeasure as the idea in today’s verse. For many, it is too absolute that all have sinned without exception. They do not like being lumped together with criminals.
Aren’t we all inclined to think that we are a little better than our fellow human beings? We like to compare ourselves with those who have more dirt on them in order to see ourselves in a good light. But if we want to know who and what man really is, we have to read in Romans 3 what God says about him: “There is none who does good, no, not one,” and, “All have sinned”. No one righteous – all sinners! That’s harsh – perhaps even offensive. Nevertheless, it’s the truth.
But God does not stop at this judgment. About 2,000 years ago, He sent His Son to earth as a human being. Jesus Christ came to seek and save that which was lost. That is why He died on the cross of Calvary for the unrighteous and sinners. Now the divine invitation is: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).
When we put our trust in the Saviour, Jesus Christ, and confess our sins to God, He absolves us of our guilt on the spot. Then we stand before Him as righteous, as if we had never sinned.
Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 33:1-12 · Ephesians 2:17-22
