It helps sometimes to make the object a little larger to control while lifting. Then when you got it where you want it, you can reduce the size.

Same with the shelves, put the item on the floor & lift it up or do the opposite, put it up in the air higher than your shelf & bring it down.

Or place the vase in the air over the table then bring it down with two fingers or by using the arrow button.
