Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. John 4:42 The Samaritan woman who had met the Lord Jesus Christ at Jacob’s well at Sychar couldn’t keep to herself what she had learned about Him. She went into the city, and her testimony caused people to come to investigate for themselves whether He might be the promised Messiah. The result was, initially, that many believed in Jesus “because of the woman’s word”, but then they asked Him to stay with them, and finally they testified the words in the verse above. The Samaritans first believed the woman’s testimony. After all, she had met Jesus before them and had come to know Him. This is how all knowledge begins, and not only in spiritual matters. Even the greatest researcher and teacher was first a student and needed others to tell him what they knew. We can see that the Samaritans took the woman’s statements quite seriously, for they felt compelled to act on them: they went out to Jesus. And after their initial impressions, they believed in Him, but still only on account of the woman’s word. But then came the crucial point: they had personal contact with the Lord Jesus, heard His words and got to know Him for who He really was. Thus, going even beyond their expectation of Him as Messiah, they came to the knowledge of Him as the “Saviour of the world”. Let us ask ourselves: Do we have our “faith” only second-hand, without a living relationship with Jesus Christ? Then it is not yet saving faith. Or do we believe in Him on account of His own word and because we have come to know Him? Then He has also become our Saviour.
