For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance. Matthew 9:13 A faithful Christian was talking to his neighbour who told him about his health problems and about a serious operation he was about to undergo. After a few encouraging words, the believer began to talk about Jesus Christ who can help and comfort in situations where all human help fails. He also shared his personal experience with the Lord Jesus when he lost his wife to death. “I envy you your faith,” the other interrupted him, “but you know, I’m just not religious.” Then the Christian said: “I wasn’t talking about religion, but about a Person who loved me so much that He sacrificed Himself for me. The Lord Jesus didn’t come to earth to seek out the religious people who are often so self-satisfied. Nor did He strive to make people religious, or even more religious than they already were. Rather, He reached out to those who were groaning under the burden of their sins and longing for a different life.” The believing man invited his sick neighbour to have coffee with him. From the accounts in the Gospels, he showed him the love of the Lord Jesus for those who experience difficult and painful circumstances. For the visitor, this conversation was the beginning of God’s work in his heart, through which he came to personal faith in the Saviour, Jesus Christ.
