So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. Luke 24:15 On the way to Emmaus, two disciples were talking about Jesus’ crucifixion and the news that He had risen from the dead. They had believed He was the promised Christ who would free His people from Roman oppression. But His death on the cross had shattered their hopes. Disappointed, they left Jerusalem and returned home. The risen Christ saw the two disciples whose faith had been dealt a severe blow. He approached them without revealing His identity and inquired about their sorrow. After they had told Him everything, He corrected their thoughts. They had only focused on the glory of Christ and had disregarded the passages in the Old Testament that spoke of His sufferings. The Lord took this correction as an opportunity to show from the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. As a result, the hearts of the two disciples began to burn. We too experience disappointments in our personal lives and in our collective Christian lives. The Lord sees the way our faith is affected at those times. He also knows if we have a wrong view of things because we overlook certain biblical truths. Because He loves us, He wants to help us out of the impasse. He may have to correct us in the process. But His goal is to draw our attention to His glorious person so that joy can return to our hearts again.
