Terraced house in Madrid
This project is only focused on the main floor of a terraced house in Madrid. Originally, this was divided in several rooms (kitchen, laundry, bathroom, living and dining room ) with a corridor, which meant lack of light as only the kitchen and the living rooms face the street.
The owners wanted some fresh air and more natural light to come in, so I decided to knock down all the walls except for the bathroom. On the contrary, we hid the staircase by adding a wall and closed the way down to the basement with a door - to avoid noise and odors.
A huge bench was built in the middle of one of the courtyard windows, thus creating two benches: one facing the courtyard and used as part of the dining space in the garden, and the other facing the living room and used as a reading nook. Some pillows make the benches more comfortable
A better view of the bench from the inside. As you can see, a square structure made of wood crosses the window (that goes from floor to ceiling) being used as two separated benches (one for the courtyard, the other for the living). The other window is a sliding door accessing the courtyard
The island is also coated with the same white tiles as used in the kitchen splashback. A blackboard gives a practical finish to the wall so any messages can be written there.
Opposite the sofa, a bookshelf has been built to integrate a fireplace with wood stack at the sides. The mirror is actually a TV that when off acts as a normal mirror
The dining room stays in between the kitchen and the living, opposite the staircase. The table is rounded to easily accomodate more people if necessary. On the left, a low cabinet accommodates the dinnerware and other accessories
Another view of the laundry room open to the kitchen. The floor is all paved with the same wood
A panoramic view from the courtyard, so you can see the 3 spaces in a row, open but still delimited: living, dining, kitchen, laundry and on the left hand side, the stairs and the hall
Opposite, the kitchen is a combination of white and wood. The front wall is covered by white tiles, also used on the base of the island (on the right part of the picture). The countertop is made of krion
Part of the kitchen has white towers to accomodate the fridge, the oven and the microwave. Behind that wall, you'll find the hall and main entrance
The hall is small although it has a wardrobe (on the right of the picture). One of the walls have been painted in very dark grey (almost black) as an accent wall
The staircase was hidden by a wall, and the way down to the basement closed by a door. One of the steps have been elongated to act as a decorative shelf
A big corner sofa, the already mentioned reading nook and an armchair make the living very comfortable. An arch lamp illuminates the coffee table. Led strings on the ceiling are used as general lighting
The kitchen is now open to the laundry room but visually separated by wood slats.
