One of the most memorable and humorous (as well as stressful) moments in my design career was when a client suggested transforming the space behind her bathtub into an underground wine cellar. While that idea was a bit too ambitious, it encouraged me to rethink the potential of bathroom layouts — reminding me how creative we can be with limited space. Small bathrooms truly challenge our ingenuity, and today I’m excited to share 10 ingenious built-in storage solutions that I’ve personally tried, appreciated, and sometimes learned the hard way.
1. Recessed Wall Niches
Instead of opting for bulky cabinets, consider installing recessed niches to take advantage of wall depth — these are ideal for holding toiletries or even small plants. I previously utilized a room planner, specifically Homestyler, to test out different sizes before finalizing the design, which helped avoid a cluttered appearance for the client.
2. Over-the-Toilet Cabinetry
That awkward empty space above the toilet can be a fantastic opportunity for additional shelving or closed cabinetry. Just ensure the depth is kept reasonable to prevent the design from feeling overwhelming.
3. Vanity Drawer Organizers
Using custom dividers for brushes, skincare products, and dental care items can create a more organized space. While it may involve a higher upfront investment, the time saved during rushed mornings is invaluable.
4. Built-in Laundry Hampers
Incorporating a pull-out hamper into the vanity cabinetry helps keep laundry discreetly stored away — say goodbye to tripping over baskets. This approach works best in medium bathrooms where there's enough cabinet space.
5. Mirror Cabinets with Lights
Mirrors that also provide concealed storage are timeless for good reason. Adding LED illumination enhances their functionality during grooming routines.
6. Under-Sink Drawers
Rather than using a single cupboard below the sink, consider installing drawers around plumbing cutouts. This simple modification allowed one of my clients to double their storage capacity without increasing the overall footprint, thanks in part to a mock-up created with Homestyler.
7. Built-in Bench with Storage
In larger bathrooms, a small bench with a hinged lid offers the perfect solution for storing extra towels. Just ensure there's adequate ventilation to avoid moisture buildup.
8. Tall Slim Cabinets
Floor-to-ceiling cabinets that are slim in design can fit into the narrowest wall spaces, making them excellent for storing cleaning supplies or extra toiletries.
9. Shower Caddies in Tiled Walls
Before tiling, integrate recessed caddies into the shower walls themselves. This prevents metal racks from rusting and contributes to a sleek overall appearance.
10. Hidden Toe-Kick Drawers
The area beneath your vanity could be concealing 4–5 inches of valuable storage space. Installing a custom pull-out drawer is perfect for stashing additional toiletries, hair dryers, or cleaning cloths — this is one design I drafted recently using a kitchen layout planner since the concepts are very similar.
