Grandma's featherbed
In this design I wanted to tell the story of the everyday living on a farm. The goal was to show how life on a farm is all about living through the good and the bad, finding beauty in your environment and carrying it into your heart every day. The story is about natural stone and rustic concrete, of old wood and distressed walls, fireplaces and cool breezes and a muddy puddle or two. It's about big families and lots of laughs, and when you cry, arms that hold you tight and cookies to make it better! The story of this house is cozy and comfortable just like grandma's featherbed.....

House built in a u-shape, with wrap around porch on one side. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, separate living rooms and big eat-in kitchen. Sustainable materials used: local stone, concrete and wood.

Courtyard
Under the Wisteria.....having a quiet moment drinking in the clean air and beautiful surroundings....
Kitchen
In the kitchen....the scullery and laundry area.
This kitchen is not about everything locked into cupboards. It's not about clutter free, but strangely there's a place for everything and there's always something going on....
The beautiful mess.....Open cabinets, rustic concrete.....
In a farmhouse kitchen a pantry is essential! Big and with plenty storage for supplies and whatever!
What's cooking? I think maybe butternut soup?
In the cooking area is they used the original hearth and repurposed it with a gas stove.
Eating area in the kitchen with direct access to the Wisteria pergola.....
Family breakfast......crumpets and blueberries.....and coffee!
Bathroom

LivingDiningRoom
This is the front door in it's wonderful shade of deep forest green. So custom for a traditional farmhouse. The color was spread throughout the house.
In the entree lobby they created this little 'mud' area to prepare for the comings and goings of the day.
This is the more formal dining area with direct access to the patio.
In the farmhouse they used all the natural stone and distressed wall finishes was kept intact.
On the dining room wall is this niche with built in shelves to display the collection of decorative plates.
You will see that they used a selection of traditional, rustic and natural decor elements. It's country style, but a more modern interpretation of it.
Grandma's wing back chairs upholstered in a more modern country look. Distressed paint finishes on the furniture.
Traditional sofas upholstered in a natural linen and a fresh white.
Different seating areas was created in the living room....and then always the cosy warmth of the fireplace.
This hearth style fireplace so typical of the farm house.
This area was designed for a little office area where admin can be done....or creative activities inspired by the big outdoors!
Bedroom
The original steel framed beds of the original farmhouse was restored to it's former glory and used in all the bedrooms.
The bedrooms are big and comfortable. The stone walls and high ceilings help to keep the room cool in the summer and the fireplace to create warmth in the winter.
The house was designed in a U-shape with wrap around porches on the one side. In the middle a courtyard area where there was a rustic pool created for the extra hot days.
The master bedroom and hallway has direct access to the middle courtyard.
Pool area. Cool and inviting.
The house was built with the natural stone of the area and combined with rustic concrete. The rustic corrugated iron roof was kept from the originak building.
This is the outdoor fireplace where they have their regular barbecued meals.
And there is the real bosses of the farm.
Wisteria and Lavender....need there be more said?
On the side of the house.....walking down the cobbled path.....looking into the windows.....
At the end of the cobbled path is an area where the wood storage are and a water tank to store extra water for the farm.
There is the wood storage area. Enough fire wood for the coming winter.
This is the back area of the house....or the front? Living on a farm it's not necessarily certain which side id front and which back. Muddy puddles and dirt.....part of living on a farm.
On the right is the rustic shed where all the outdoor activities happens.
The shed....big enough for all the cars and whatever is needed on the farm....And the big bosses are watching!
Bathroom
Shower area in the family bathroom.
Corridor
The corridor is wide and spacious and almost a living room on it's own. And with the fresh air streaming in from the outdoors....
MasterBedroom
When entering the master bedroom is this area that was styled as a creative work area. Enough storage to hide all the creative materials. Again fresh air streaming in from the outside.
The wonderful world of natural yarn......knitting....
In the bedroom is this sitting area. Cosy and comfortable.

In the master bedroom the toilet area was put into a closed room for privacy.
Master bathroom.....elegant and rustic and gorgeous.
The tub.....what more can be said....
Corridor
This is one of the outdoor living areas where you could sit and relax at the end of the day enjoying the view....and maybe the sunset.
Eating al fresco......
Trees are important on a farm because they provide shade and green in a sometimes harsh environment.
Rustic concrete pool....how inviting!
SecondBedroom
More of the renovated original beds.....and the sun coming in from the window
The distressed wall finish with the wood paneling and stone walls and of course the very rustic cobbled finish on the floors which was used through the house. All this are the elements telling the story of the house.
Terrace
In the courtyard several seating areas was created. 'To just sit and relax and take it all in.
CloakRoom
This is the story of the cloak room.....
Old traditional vanity, vintage traditional tiles....stone and distressed walls. And this is where the story ends! I hope you had a good time reading it.
