Jesus said to him, Rise, take up your bed and walk. And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. John 5:8–9 After a man who had been ill for 38 years admitted his hopeless condition, Jesus healed him. Let’s consider the exact wording used by the Son of God in this miraculous healing: “Rise” – Are you perhaps feeling down inside at the moment? Do you lack the strength and courage to live? Then this word of the Lord Jesus applies to you personally. The Lord Jesus Christ – and only He – can give you the strength to “rise”. Talk to Him about everything that is lacking in your life and not right. Entrust yourself to Him as your Saviour and He will give you a fresh start. “… take up your bed” – The bed was probably just a mat that the healed man rolled up and took with him. That which had carried the sick man for years was now carried by him. Similarly, for all those to whom the Lord Jesus has given new life: the old has passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). In the strength of this new life it becomes possible to bear burdens that would previously have been overwhelming. “... and walk” – With this, Jesus urges him: Show your fellow men that you have been healed by Me! Whoever has come to believe in Christ is tasked with living a life that invites others to their Lord. This requires qualities such as humility, patience, willingness to sacrifice and self-denial. It isn’t always easy, but the motivation and energy for it come from the Lord Jesus, who saw this hopelessly sick man in his misery, healed him out of compassion, and sent him into an entirely new life with His divine love.
