City Apartment, Shadow Grey
This is the city apartment designed for Andrew, aka Mr. Shadow. He is a photographer who specializes in taking creative and very artistic pictures using a special grey scale technique. Then it came as no surprise when he preferred his interior design to be in the same color palette of grey on grey. The color of the year, Shadow, was the perfect match for his taste and it earned him the name of Mr. Shadow. The apartment has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, enough living spaces, good kitchen and dining area and a small exercise room. On the deck a small pool/ water feature and the best city view!
The apartment was spread out over two floors. Large living areas in different zones was spread over the whole lower level. On the top floor was the sleeping quarters fitted containing two bedrooms and two bathrooms, small exercise room and on the landing a good office area.
For Andrew, being a photographer, it's essential that every space in his house has to reach a high standard aesthetically. He is intrigued by architectural lines and therefore the impressive bed with the high bedhead....and of course in the grey on grey tones.
Pictures are his bread and butter, his way of expressing himself. So spread through the apartment will be a wide selection of art prints and photographs.
The bedroom has a very small balcony walkway that is perfect for this photographer to play with the magnificent view of the city!
And of course......one of his babies!
The dressing area in the bedroom was hidden behind the feature wall and with ample storage. Our mr Shadow has to travel a lot to get his work done.....hence the suitcase always on standby. Big mirrors not only to perfect the look of the man of the house, but also to give extra depth!
Oh yes, there you have it! Kicking off shoes is not just a girl thing......
One has to admire the way grey upon grey was done with so many pattern and texture and grandeur!
This is the view from lying in bed......who could ever resist this!
On the balcony walkway just a glimpse of the small pool/water feature on the roof slab!
In the small exercise room an air conditioner was fitted to provide a fresh stream of air.
Small exercise room with limited but efficient exercise equipment to fill his needs for keeping up his good looks.
On the wall of the exercise room is somewhat of a life motto to keep him motivated and the artwork explains a little bit more......
This is one of the biggest reasons why Andrew will never want to sell this apartment! His work and inspiration is literally a stones throw away!
Hidden behind walls for a little bit of privacy is this little outside area. Not overgrown with plants and kept as uncomplicated as possible, but with great impact on the senses!
The grey of the city with the rosy tints of early morning and the bursting color of city life against the calmness of the shadowy grey playing together in this house.....
Standing behind the curved counter in the open plan kitchen living area! Blonde wood and charcoal steel, deep gold and shiny stainless steel....and all brought together with the shadow of grey that was used so effectively.
Extra seating at the kitchen counter. The counter was made up with storage all around, cleverly hiding all the kitchen clutter.
This is the view from one corner of the living area in the kitchen......and to show off the lovely steel and glass fireplace which brings so much warmth and atmosphere in the room.
In this picture is the full impact of how shapes and textures were chosen to play off each other but also highlighting each other in the forgiving shadow of Grey!! The smallest of accent colors was used in the art on the wall and the pillows and it was all taken from the colors of the city below.
On the left is the dining area which was done with an impressive steel and wood structure which leads the visitor through the apartment from the front door to the kitchen living area. The raised platform of the structure brought so much interest in the space.
The floor to ceiling bookcase was supplied with a ladder to reach the top shelves.
The art prints on the wall was carefully chosen to reflect all the different textures and architectural and décor elements in the space!
The top of the stairs ending into a spacious landing where an office area was fitted.
From the landing there's doors leading into the two en suite bedrooms. On the back wall a selection of pictures from our resident photographer.
In this day and age everybody is relying on their electronics to make things work and that is the best reason for this office area equipped with a good computer and ample storage.
The second bathroom is small but very stylish and to the comfort of the overnight guests. Again the grey on grey palette was used very effectively to bring extra interest but also a feeling of extra space in the room.
This space is serving as an entrance hall, but also as the first reception room of the apartment. Coming into the space from the front door you are immediately embraced by the calm and almost serene presence of grey. On the wall the trademark greyscale photos of the man of the house.
Walking past the staircase you get this little surprise! A music nook tucked away.....but with the promise of many a happy hour!!
On the right the step up into the wood and steel structure under which the dining area was fitted.
From this angle one could see the road that needs to be travelled from entering the apartment up and down the structure into the kitchen and living area on that side.
The dining room under the the walkway of wood and steel!! But oh so impressive and different!
This picture to demonstrate the architectural impact of the structure that was used in the middle of this apartment to create a clever divide between two areas and still was given a function of it's own!
The staircase were kept white and open. A small closet was fitted under the stairs for the essential coat and scarves! On the left is the selection of grey scale artworks visible.
This is the entrance to the apartment, showing off an elegant selection of décor elements on the credenza.
See how the architectural bones of the light fixture plays along with the lines of the steel structure.
The dining area was fitted with a well stocked bar cabinet. The table is set for a dinner party.
This is the master bathroom! Spacious and custom designed! Big free standing soaker tub and a rain shower to wash away all the travels and troubles of the world. Coming home after a long and sometimes tiresome journey, this is the space where he wants to find his balance again.
Matt grey mosaic tiles and the gorgeous richness of terrazzo on the counter top. Good bathroom products because the metro man also needs pampering! The architectural lines of the towel stand and mirrors on the wall a reflection on the style and taste that flows through the apartment.
The terrazzo finish was repeated on the bulkheads above the vanity. Vanity was chosen with enough storage for extra bathroom linen and accessories.
This is the second bedroom and as stylish and comfortable as the main bedroom. Again with the amazing artwork displayed on the walls. A haven for any guest!
Beautiful city views bringing in all the colors of the city to brighten up the shadows of grey.
This is the front entrance of the apartment from the outside! With the city keeping guard day and night.
Yes in the city there's always the need of a bike! For exercise but also sometimes for a faster getaway??

standing on the gantry I had goose bumps I just knew that this was going to be a property I would adore ...... and WOW how it lived up to expectations and so much more. Your talents for creating the architectural shell is a gift in itself but then the interior itself matches and leave me once more in awe. This home for Andrew was sleek and a total masculine delight. That shot of the sitting room with the tall windows and city behind it took my breath away. The downstairs area with its flow and complexity was just outstanding and your use of space is a lesson to us all. My favourite property from you Hester probably because the décor mirrored my own personal tastes... and lets be frank I LOVE just anything you turn your hands too. Bravo and here's looking forwards to next weeks unveil already!!
