MCM Renovation
The Joneses bought a dilapidated MCM house built in 1952 and renovated it, blending old with new. The house had been renovated previously, and the original entrance and alcove were walled over.Instead of using it as an entrance, it became the overflow secondary guest room. They decided to restore one original stone wall and then duplicated the stone finish in the alcove. The alcove now functions as a guest welcoming center with refreshments and hooks to hang clothing . They installed a big screen TV on the stone wall and a modern electric "flame"fireplace. They retained and restored the original door but sealed it and added insulation behind it. It now forms a wall for the MCM desk brought down from the attic. The desk was painstakingly restored using multiple coats of thin stain. To maximize space and allow for extra space, two benches were used. The first was double wide and functions as a narrow twin daybed. The second bench of the same model is smaller and provides extra seating. Finally, a window with remote controlled blinds was installed on the ceiling, allowing for extra light during the day. ( pictured at dawn with blinds closed) One final note: the original hardwood floors in this part of the home, (which is only 1 story, the addition put on in 1990 contains a second story),were too damaged by water to restore so an easy to maintain laminate floor was used instead.
