You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
John 5:39
After a Gospel talk, a young man addressed the preacher, “I’m a lost cause. I don’t believe in anything.” “Then what do you expect me to do?” replied the preacher.
“One thing has become clear to me: faith makes you happy. I envy you. What do you want me to do? What should I study?”
“Only the Bible!” was the preacher’s reply. “What’s the use of reading it if I don’t believe it is the Word of God?” asked the young man.
Then the evangelist opened his Bible, read today’s verse, and declared, “The Scriptures themselves testify to their divine origin and to the deity of the Lord Jesus.”
“All right. I’ll read the Bible. And what else do I have to do?” “Pray,” was the reply.
“But why should I pray to God if I don’t believe in Him at all?” “That is no obstacle, but you must be honest. God answers the one who sincerely seeks Him,” said the preacher.
“Anything else?” “Ask God to open your understanding. And then act on it” the preacher replied.
“Is that really all?” “Yes,” came the answer.
Two weeks later, the young man came again and reported, “I read what you told me. Then I asked God to show Himself to me and prove to me that the Bible is His Word and that Jesus Christ is His Son and the Saviour of sinners. Then I got clarity about who Jesus is and what He has done for me, so I finally accepted His invitation. Broken inside, I turned to Him in prayer and found inner peace. Now I know that He loves me and that my sins are taken away by the power of His blood.”
