That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life … we declare to you.
1 John 1:1–3
Celebrities often have a hard time living a normal life undetected by paparazzi and fans. Once, a man with a glued-on beard and wig appeared in a jewellery store in Los Angeles. The jeweller thought that he was a robber and alerted the police. But then the suspect turned out to be a well-known artist who had disguised himself to avoid the attention of his admirers.
At that I think of the Son of God, who was of incomparably higher origin and of greater dignity. Many also came to Him – to see and hear Him or to seek help from Him. At times, great crowds surrounded Him and gave Him no respite. And yet He did not withdraw from the people. When He wanted to be alone to pray, He often used the night hours for that. Nevertheless, Jesus Christ was available to everyone, not only during the day, but also at night, if anyone so desired. Thousands in Israel had followed His activity with their own eyes, many had listened to Him, and some had even touched Him. And how many He had healed!
And yet, a little later, the chants of the stirred-up crowds in Jerusalem resounded: “Crucify Him!” – Him, of all people, who had done only good! On the other hand, the Bible leaves no doubt that He voluntarily laid down His life for His enemies. Through this act, He truly became the Saviour of the world. Still today, He is the Saviour for everyone who believes in Him.
Compared to this wonderful Lord, what are the celebrities of the world? They have died and remain in the grave. But Jesus Christ lives!
