mdu architetti - misuratori differenziale urbano (urban differential measurers) - is an architecture practice founded in 2001 in Prato (Italy) by Valerio Barberis (1971), Alessandro Corradini (1964) and Marcello Marchesini (1970), later joined by Cristiano Cosi (1974).
The studio’s range of activities goes from urban planning to interior design, and often reaches pure intellectual meditation through theoretical projects developed in the occasion of architecture exhibitions and workshops, where the practice is invited.
MDU’s action field are contemporary landscapes, physical and unphysical places on which nowadays men live.
The method is based on the doubt, the neverending criticizing of all what seems to be evident, usual and certain in order to reveal the various “invisible cities” over the “official” one.
The approach starts from a study of reality as seen from an unconventional, transgressive, point of view, searching all the differences that are evident and latent inside it.
Architecture takes life from the collision amongst all the alterities of the landascape.
The practice has had a high success rate in national and international architectural competitions.
The studio was invited in a number of different architecture exhibitions in Florence, Lecce, Lisbon, London, Milan, Naples, Oderzo (Venice), Parma, Pontedera (Pisa), Rome, Shanghai, Trevi and Venice; and it has been presented on websites, in magazines and publications on architecture both nationally and internationally.
Among the built projects: Poolhouse Fioravanti in Prato, RRS & Feng Lin Showroom in Shanghai, EsseBi Showroom in Agliana (Pistoia), the art gallery dedicated to the work of the sculptor Giuliano Vangi in Florence, the transformation of a series of old industrial building in apartments and lofts in Prato, the Municipal Library of Greve in Chianti (Florence) and the Municipal Thedatre of Montalto di Castro (Rome).
